All you need to know about sound recording

microphone

Sound recording is the process of recording audio material for the purpose of preserving and reproducing it.

There are several types of sound recording:

  • Mechanical. In this case a gramophone needle squeezes out a groove on the surface of a moving medium (record) which corresponds to the shape of the sound vibrations being recorded.
  • Magnetic. Tact with sound vibrations is magnetized to certain areas of the carrier (tape) moving through a magnetic field. The field is created by using a magnetic head, through the winding of which the electric currents of the microphone pass. Music material recorded on magnetic tape can be listened to using a tape recorder.
  • Digital. In this case, the sound recording is stored on files on a computer. The essence of digital sound recording is the use of pulse-code modulation. This technology of converting analog sound to digital allows the recording to be stored on a variety of media.

Of course, in recent years, digital sound recording has been used, and there are different types of tools used in its creation (computer, all kinds of programs, etc.).
Types of recording studios

Today, every quality recording studio is equipped as follows:

  • A computer for recording music, and necessarily with a large processor power that will allow you to quickly work simultaneously with a large number of plug-ins, sound effects.
  • A music recording program (DAW). This is a digital workstation that is designed to produce music and its further processing. Each studio uses its own DAW program which is convenient for it.
  • Sound card. This takes into account the number of input channels, which directly affects the number of instruments that can be connected and recorded simultaneously.
  • Speakers. They are needed to listen to the recorded material. In this case, you can not do without professional equipment, as it is very important to hear the entire spectrum of frequencies to accurately identify any flaws.
  • Headphones, the choice of which depends on the amplitude and frequency characteristics.
  • A MIDI keyboard that allows you to record the parts of virtual instruments.
